The book charts the chain's rise to the top of the stock market, including their contribution to the Home Front in World War II, and examines the reasons for their decline in later years and sudden collapse into administration in the credit crunch of 2008. It also covers the rebirth of Woolworths as a major on-line brand as part of Shop Direct Group.

The author was given access to the full picture and document archives of the store-based chain. The book gives a rare insight into early twentieth century retailing and the birth of the consumer society.
